Tchaikovsky's endlessly melodious Violin Concerto introduces brilliant young violinist David Southorn, winner of the Symphony's 2007 Young Artist Competition. Plus a world premiere of a new work for erhu (Chinese violin) and symphony orchestra by composer Albert Chang, with renowned soloist Hong Wang from Fremont's acclaimed ensemble Melody of China. GLORIOUS STRINGS SAT, FEBRUARY 9, 2008 AT 8 PM Schoenberg: Verklaerte Nacht Handel: Concerto Grosso, Op. 6, No. 7 Harrison: Suite for Symphonic Strings
The centerpiece of this program is Arnold Schoenberg's Verklaerte Nacht  ("Transfigured Night"), written when the young composer was still under the spell of Wagner, and rich with post-romantic emotionalism. It contrasts beautifully with the clever counterpoint and charming Baroque dance rhythms of Handel's Concerto Grosso. Antique dance rhythms also figure prominently in Lou Harrison's Suite for Symphonic Strings, in which players even "thump" their own instruments to mark the patterns. Order Tickets
THE BEST OF BEETHOVEN SAT, MARCH 22, 2008 AT 8 PM Coriolan Overture Symphony No. 2 in D Major Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat Major, "Emperor"
Celebrated artist John Nakamatsu makes his first appearance with the Fremont Symphony, as soloist in Beethoven's triumphant "Emperor" Concerto.The stormy Coriolan Overture and the graceful, classically influenced Symphony No. 2 complete this all-Beethoven concert. Nakamatsu won the Gold Medal at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 1997. He performs throughout the United States, Europe and Japan as concerto soloist with leading symphony orchestras, as chamber musician, recitalist and recording artist.
