West African Dance,  Piano Concertos, Shakespeare, Einstein...you can find it all and much more at the Soren Smith Performing Arts Center this Season.

 

"The Arts Come Alive" when the professional artists and ensembles of Smith Center Presents!  take the stage. Music, dance, comedy, drama and the visual arts from a variety of cultures and traditions are featured during the 12th season.

Diamano Coura,"those who bring the message" in Senegalese, has been sharing their historical recreations of west African village dance rituals since 1975. The company includes dancers, actors, singers, acrobats, musicians, stiltwalkers, and visual artists from Mali, Senegal, Guinea, the Ivory  Coast, Liberia, Gambia and the United States.

You've never heard anything quite like the Italian Saxophone Quartet. It's obvious almost immediately that the musical character of this group is very special. The four varieties of saxophone --- soprano, alto, tenor and baritone --- blend to produce a unique fusion of sound quality --- sensuous and rich. Lead by world renowned Federico Mondelci on soprano, the group has  been thrilling audiences world wide for over 20 years. The unity and spectrum of the tonal fusion they produce enables them to play a wide variety of original compositions and saxophone transcriptions with exhilarating bravura.Break out of the winter doldrums with the truly exciting music of this international group.

This year the Smith Center Spotlight focuses on an emerging artist in an intimate setting. R.W. Kendrick's most recent recording of original jazz and acoustic guitar music has received airplay on KCSM, the popular Bay Area jazz station. He will be joined in his exciting Smith Center Debut by bass, drum and percussion players from his album Havana Dream, an evocative mixture of jazz, Latin and classical guitar. R.W. Kendrick is the author of a guitar method, Kendrick's G-string guitar.
